The Marangu route stands out as the most preferred path for trekkers seeking to conquer the summit of Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its gentle pace, this route takes you through diverse landscapes including forests, moorlands, and the high-altitude desert known as ‘The Saddle,’ culminating at the majestic Uhuru Point.
Arrival Day at Kilimanjaro International Airport Pick up from airport and transfer to accommodation in Arusha for an overnight stay.
Hiking Time: 5 hours (approx 12km) After breakfast, we will drive from Arusha to the Marangu Park gate. All hikers are required to sign in at the park entrance while the guides and porters make the final preparations. Oncecomplete, the hike will commence through the park gate into a beautifully green rainforest. The rainforest is full of wildlife and if you’re lucky enough, you might be able to spot a few animals especially the Monkeys and birds with a lot of flower species along the way to our first camp,Mandara Hut 2700m. In these huts you will have proper lights from solar and small beds with mattress. You only need your sleeping bags on these beds.
Hiking Time: 6 hours (approx 11 km) – In the morning, embark on a journey through the forest towards the rim of the Maundi Crater. Enjoy panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, as well as Lake Chala on the northern side. – Traverse moorlands and heathers, spotting Tanzania’s diverse wildlife and indigenous plants like Lobelia Decanie and giant senecio. – Lunch on the way to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night. This day provides an opportunity to acclimatize to the increasing altitude.
Hiking Time: 2 hours (Approx 4.5 km) – Rest and acclimatization day with an optional short hike to Zebra Rocks (4000m) or Mawenzi Hut (4200m). – Return to Horombo Hut for lunch and ample rest, preparing for the next leg of the journey.
– Hike to Kibo Hut through the alpine desert and saddle area (4-5 hrs). Lunch at the Saddle area. – Early dinner before the midnight summit attempt. – Midnight ascent towards Gillman’s Point (5688m) on a rocky path and steep scree. – Further ascent to Uhuru Peak (5895m), where you’ll witness breathtaking views. – Descend back to Kibo Hut for rest.
Hiking Time: 4 hours (9 km) – After summiting, descend to Horombo Hut for the last night on the mountain.
Hiking Time: 7 hours (18 km) – A long day descending through the rainforest. – Spot monkeys, including the blue and black and white colobus monkey. – Reach Marangu Gate, have lunch, receive certificates, and drive back to Arusha for a well-deserved shower, relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay. Embark on this remarkable journey, conquering Kilimanjaro’s summit and immersing yourself in the diverse landscapes of Tanzania. The Marangu route offers an unforgettable experience with wildlife, flora, and stunning vistas.
