Immerse yourself in Tanzanian culture by visiting a Maasai and Materuni settlement on Kilimanjaro’s foothills. Explore two villages and learn about their traditions, history, and cuisine.
We will pick you up in the morning from your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi, or from the Kilimanjaro/Arusha airports, in a clean air-conditioned vehicle, and transport you to Materuni village. Materuni village, home to the Chagga people, is the penultimate village before arriving at Kilimanjaro National Park. We'll start with a village stroll to the Materuni waterfalls, which are approximately 45 minutes distant. On the trip, your guide will teach you about the Chagga tribe's culture, village life, and the local flora and fauna. Admire the stunning views and, with luck, get sight of Mount Kilimanjaro's peak. The terrain can be slick and muddy along the way; excellent hiking shoes with grip and a raincoat are recommended. When you get at the waterfalls, take at the cascades that are more than 80 meters (262 feet) tall. After appreciating the surroundings, we will leisurely return to Materuni town with your guide to enjoy a traditional Chagga lunch and sample our native banana beer! You will be asked to assist with the grinding of the coffee, which is traditionally accompanied with Chagga songs and dances - a great chance to immerse yourself in the local culture. You will create your own cup of coffee in traditional techniques, taste local coffee, and learn about the Tanzanian coffee industry. Before saying farewell, you can enjoy the coffee you made and take in the sights of the surrounding rainforest before driving a short distance from Moshi to a Maasai community near Kilimanjaro airport. The Maasai people live in small mud-thatched villages surrounded by their cattle and other livestock. For hundreds of years, the Maasai have traveled Tanzania's regions, enjoying a nomadic existence. A meeting with these Maasai people will be the highlight of your Kilimanjaro climb or safari vacation. Many tribal villages allow visitors to experience their culture and way of life firsthand. On this day tour, you will get the unique opportunity to interact with the Maasai community. The community allows visitors to see many traditional features of Maasai life while also seeing how the Maasai adapt to progress and touch with contemporary culture. All visits are planned and organized by the Maasai themselves; they will show you their traditional Maasai dance and singing, different types of Maasai houses, traditional beads, making fire, ornaments, some bush techniques and medicine, and you can also walk with their cattle on the plains before returning to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. We'll be spending the majority of our stay around Mount Kilimanjaro, which increases our chances of viewing and photographing the mountain.
